Definition of Mortality:

Mortality is the term that is used for the number of people who died within a population. It directs to the incidence of death or the no. of deaths in a population.

Infant Mortality Rate (IMR):
The infant mortality rate is defined as the rate of infant death registered in a given year to the total number of live births registered in the same year, usually expressed as a rate per 1000 live births. It is given by the formula.

Infant Mortality Rate Calculation Formula:

Infant mortality rate (IMR), 

          No. of deaths under one year of age in an area during a year
= ………………………………………………………………………………………….. × 1000
                   No. of live births in the same area and same year

Infant mortality rate (IMR) = 57/1000 live birth.

 
Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR):
The ratio of neonatal deaths in a given year to the total number of live births in the same year. The neonatal mortality rate is generally presented as a rate per 1000.

Neonatal Mortality Rate Calculation Formula:

Neonatal mortality rate (NMR),

     No. of deaths of children under 28 days of age in a year
= …………………………………………………………………………….. × 1000
                      Total live births in the same year

Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR) = 30/1000 live birth.

Post-neonatal Mortality Rate:
The ratio of post-neonatal, paths in a given year to the total number of live births in the same year.

Post-neonatal Mortality Rate Calculation Formula:

Post-neonatal mortality rate = 133/1000 live birth.

Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR):
It is the number of deaths of mothers from pregnancy, delivery, and puerperal causes during a calendar year per thousand of childbirth.

Maternal Mortality Rate Calculation Formula:
Maternal mortality rate (MMR), 

  (Total no. of female deaths of the mother due to complications of pregnancy, childbirth or within 6 weeks of delivery from “puerperal cause” in an area during a given year)
= ……………………………………………………………………………………………….… × 1000
                                 Total no. of live births in the same area in that year

According to WHO, the maternal mortality rate (MMR) in Bangladesh was 24011 in the year 2010.
